Масленица (Maslenitsa) is a religious festival based on the harvest season for Russia. It's the equivalent of Madi Gras. I have not experienced either so, the topic fascinates me. It is also known as Butter Week, Pancake Week, or Cheesefare Week. This is celebrated the last week before Lent. Maslenitsa has a dual ancestry, According to Slavic mythology, it is a sun festival that celebrates the end of the winter season. On the Orthodox side, it is the way to bring in Lent. The main food that corresponds with Maslenitsa is the Bliny or Russian Pancake symbolizing the sun. Main activities are Sledding, Masquerades, Snowball Fights, Bonfires, and more. The mascot is a straw figure referred to as Lady Maslenitsa. The ceremony on Sunday evening marks the end of the celebration. One of the main events during this time is a large bonfire that is filled with Lady Maslenitsa straws. This is the final thing that rings in the new season. Maslenitsa in my opinion is an excellent way to come together. I have not seen many USA traditions and holidays that bring this many people together happily. We have our occasional New Years Eve apple or peach drop but, this is rarely a huge time for massive celebration. One thing that fasinantes me with the Russians is there willingness to work hard but, play harder. Перейти Масленица!!! :)
